Commexis Cast Daily – Oct. 20, 2017: Buzzfeed Busts Open a Huge Ad Fraud Scheme

Today’s Commexis Cast discusses Buzzfeed News Media Editor Craig Silverman’s latest report on an ad fraud scheme that affected over 100 brands such as P&G, Unilever, Hershey’s, Johnson & Johnson, and more. Silverman states the scheme involved using “zombie sites” that had little to no appeal for humans, but that when visited by a bot using a special URL would initiate what’s called “ad hell”, where ads would continuously play over and over with some playing multiple at a time. The article states the scheme could have stolen about $20 million this year. Plus, The Cast breaks down the latest piece by Digiday’s Lucia Moses, which focuses on frustrations with auto-play video. What does this mean for companies hoping to create better user experiences? We weigh in.
