Commexis Cast Daily – Feb. 23, 2018: Twitter’s Second Wave of Bot Bannings

Today’s Commexis Cast discusses Twitter’s latest bot bannings which coincide with a policy update that prohibits sending the same tweet, or “liking” or “retweeting” a tweet from multiple accounts at once. The policy update hit on February 21st and comes in response to growing criticism of the platform for allowing a hive of bot accounts to pop-up over the years.

Yoel Roth, the head of API policy at Twitter, wrote in a blog post announcing the three big changes to Twitter.

  1. Do not (and do not allow your users to) simultaneously post identical or substantially similar content to multiple accounts.
  2. Do not (and do not allow your users to) simultaneously perform actions such as Likes, Retweets, or follows from multiple accounts.
  3. The use of any form of automation (including scheduling) to post identical or substantially similar content, or to perform actions such as Likes or Retweets, across many accounts that have authorized your app (whether or not you created or directly control those accounts) is not permitted.

The policy change, and subsequent suspending or banning of bot accounts, “ensur[es] we stay ahead of malicious activity targeting the crucial conversations taking place on Twitter — including elections in the United States and around the world.”

There is one exception to the rule, which allows “applications that broadcast or share weather, emergency, or other public service announcements of broad community interest (for example, earthquake or tsunami alerts) are permitted to post this content across multiple accounts who have authorized an app.”
