Commexis Cast – July 13, 2018: Pandora and Snap Partner, Open Up Potential Marketing Opportunity In Future

Today’s Commexis Cast discusses Pandora and Snap partnering to allow song sharing on Snap’s platform. While it seems like a cool new social feature, there’s a real opportunity for interesting marketing potential.

The new feature was announced last month, and has been released to all iOS users. To use the feature, a user listening to a song on Pandora has to hit the share button, and then the “Share on Snapchat” button. Then, Snapchat will open to a snap themed around the album art of the song.

Users can then send the song to a friend who will be able to listen to it for free following a short ad.

 

While the social features involved with this partnership are certainly interesting, it’s the marketing potential that Phillip and I are most interested in. During the podcast Phillip saw this as a fantastic opportunity for movies with unique soundtracks to advertise their product just through social sharing. I think that the next logical step of this partnership is to allow users to use snippets of songs in the snaps they send (in a similar move to what Instagram is doing with Spotify). Even our Paid Placement Specialist Jim expects there to be some form of additional advertising available other than the 15 second ad before listening.
