Walmart Brings Voice Controlled Shopping to Google Assistant – The Buyer’s Journey 24

Watch out Amazon, Walmart is introducing voice controlled purchasing to Google Assistant voice search with some helpful additional features not found with Alexa.

The Purchase Stage

The purchase stage of The Buyer’s Journey is easiest to explain. To simply put it, the Purchase Stage is when your customer purchases your product or service. But just because this is the center of the stage doesn’t mean it’s the only thing that matters. For example: how is a customer purchasing your product? What does your product’s packaging look like? If you offer a service, what does the online portal look like? On what device? These are all things that matter during the purchase stage. 

Voice Search and Voice Purchase

Chaim Gartenberg on The Verge reports that Walmart is introducing voice controlled purchasing through Google Assistant.  The addition comes as part of the new Walmart Voice Order feature and is aimed to compete with Amazon’s Alexa voice purchasing. 

Here’s an excerpt from Walmart’s site: “Beginning this month, customers can say, ‘Hey Google, talk to Walmart’ and the Google Assistant will add items directly to their Walmart Grocery cart. Best of all, customers can be extra confident that we can quickly and accurately identify the items they are asking for with the help of information from their prior purchases with us. The more you use it, the better we’ll get.”

In addition, when customers say things such as “buy milk”, Walmart will determine which brand by looking at their purchase history.

K.I.S.S: Keep It Simple Stupid

As voice search and voice purchase continue to expand, it’s clear that simplicity and ease of use are becoming important factors. And that makes complete sense. After all, it’s beneficial to retailers to make their process of purchase as simple, convenient, and easy for their customers. Simplicity and convenience can reduce bounce and cart abandonment, and as I’m sure Amazon and Walmart are aware, increase purchases.
